baltimore city schools are working hard to make sure that their students achieve at a higher level and in in cases just stay in school. they're focusing on what happens to their students after high school. dr. andres alonzo joins us this morning. >> good morning. >> how are you this morning. >> i'm great, happy new year to you. >> happy new year to you. >> now that the new year, you have to get kids ready for college. >> we have that there's a lot of kids graduating. what we he see is that they don't enroll in college. >> why is that? >> part of it is a lack of mop hey. thethey -- money. and they haven't figured out how to make it work with their finances. we have a big push to make sure that every graduating senior applies for federal financial aid. we want every senior to complete the fafsa form by february 21st.
6:55 am
there's almost $100 million available for every student. it makes no sense for any of our kids not to apply. we have having two fares, january 16th and january 23rd at success academy at our central office in north avenue from 10 to 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon where we want to explain to parents, you know, this is what this is about and trying to get -- try to get every single senior that we graduate able to continue their studies and not have to give up because they don't like -- they lack the circumstances. >> is there help actually filling out that afs fafsa form. it's tricky to say, and it's trickier to fill it out. >> the feds are trying to streamline it right now. it's complicated. i remember it, i'm sure you remember it as well, but there's no excuse for not doing it. it means too much for our kids.
6:56 am
the difference in lifetime earnings, between completing any type of college and not completing any college at all is amazing over the lifetime of a person. so we want our kids to have that kind of experience, go to school, i mean, it's fine if they go to a trade, they go into the army, all of those things are fine, but what we want is college access and if the circumstance -- if the kid is not able to stay on track because of academics, that is one thing and it's our responsibility to improve those outcomes, but when he we have so many students who have extraordinary potential and when we go back to them a year later or two years later, they tell us because they can't afford it. w we have the responsibility that each child completes that the form. we will do it for them if we have to.
